Today, I attended my first personal finance conference.
Although it was nice meeting lots of people that I’ve looked up to over the past year, it made me realize how different both my voice and audience is from the dominant personal finance community.
I don’t just share money advice. I share so much of myself.
I share my struggles with financial anxiety.
I share my experience as a queer woman of colour.
I share my hope for a living wage.
I share my thoughts on why the current labour economy is hurting Millennials, low-wage earners and marginalized communities.
I write so much more than personal finance.
I write about finding happiness through striving for a more just society.
And even though I may be an outlier in the personal finance community, I know that it really just means there’s a void that needs to be filled. Because, like me, you not only just care about your money but the world around you too.
On August 31, 2017, my little blog went live.
Since then, this happened:
Quoted in an article that was published in CBC, Business Insider, and Huffington Post
Almost 10,000 views on this blog
60,000 views on Quora (within one week)
3,600 views on Medium (November only)
One Quora answer was viewed 45.1k times + 1,181 upvotes (within 3 days)
4 Quora answers were included in 4 separate Quora Digests (sent to a total of 18k people via e-mail - all within 1 day)
Collaborated with an awesome financial company
This is not to brag (although, woah), but a simple thank you.
Every single day, I write for at least two hours.
Every single day, I read for at least an hour.
Regardless if I’m tired, uninspired or have a never-ending to-do list, I write. I view it as a craft to be mastered. I treat it with the respect that it deserves. And so, every “Like”, “Retweet” and "Upvote" means the world to me. I won't even mention how my heart spills onto the floor with all the personal e-mails and messages I have received.
Now, more than ever, I'm fired up to produce more content that aligns with our values and our little up-and-coming community.
Get excited. The come up is about to be real.
